Website Technical Information
This website was designed to maximize the number of web standards met, while maintinaing strict guidelines for maximum accessibility and aesthetics.
The entire site is designed with XHTML 1.1 (a stricter equivalent of XHTML 1.0 Strict), making its design function and appear consistent in all modern browsers. The layout and aesthetics of the site were constructed with CSS 2.0, making design changes across the site a breeze.
The functionality of the site was built on the concept of 'Web 2.0' -- a movement in which simplicity, automation, and user experience matter above all other design elements. In order to accomplish this, we've used Javascript 1.3 in combination with the Prototype, moo.fx, and script.aculo.us frameworks to provide gentle animation and transitions where they count. For example, when you press Reset Map on the Location page, the map provides a visual cue by shaking back and forth.
Continuing in the style of Web 2.0, we used Lightbox JS with the moo.fx framework to provide a simple way to display images.
This site was tested for use in the following browsers:
- Internet Explorer 6.0 (Windows 98-XP)
- Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta (Windows XP-Vista)
- Opera 8.51
- Camino
- Firefox 1.5
This site uses a valid RSS 2.0 news feed with XML Stylesheets and XSLT support for displaying it in modern browsers.
Most images are in PNG format, allowing for flexibility with our site design and small file sizes. Because PNG is also widely supported, it works in all modern browsers. Though alpha-transparency does not work in IE 6.0, the images degrade very nicely to gray.
